What’s Important?

Imagine spending all of your house payment money on a new 52 inch flat screen television. Hard to picture? You mount it on your wall and it works so well. The picture is crisp and the detail makes you feel like your there.

But now there’s not enough  money  to pay  your rent. Seems pretty crazy, doesn’t it? Most people in their right mind would never consider something like that. Sadly, it’s happening with our government.

According to the National Priorities Project, an organization that tracks military spending, $939 billion has been spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. Our share of that cost in California is $118 billion, and here in the City of  San Luis Obispo, it adds up to $104 million. (Nationalprioritiesproject.org)

Imagine the good that could be done in our local communities if that money were available for other purposes. I think about the need in Health Care, Police and Fire protection, Library services, Prenatal Care, Mental Health, Veteran’s Care, Parks and Recreation, Senior Services, Public Transportation,  Homeless Services, improving infrastructure and, for our future leaders, funding for education.
Dwight D Eisenhower said it well. “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”

So, why do we allow our elected representatives to steal from our local communities? Beats me.
